Gala continues tradition of celebration and community
It was big. It was bold. It was the MEDA Gala 2007! 700 partygoers had a blast at this premier black-tie event on Saturday, November 17.
The 2007 MEDA Gala was more than a party. It was a celebration of entrepreneurs of color. From the soulful sounds performed by the Grammy Award-winning Sounds of Blackness, including a Motown revue, and African drumming by the Hayor Bibimma Dance group to a lively auction and light-hearted game of heads and tails, guests were entertained, engaged and empowered.
As MEDA's largest single fundraiser, proceeds from the event provide critical funding for MEDA's business development services. Emceed by Robyne Robinson, FOX9 evening news anchor, the night featured such items as airfare and one-week stays for two at two great locations -- Radisson Aruba and Mountainside at SilverCreek Condominiums -- as well as a silent auction with more than 200 items/packages.
"The Gala is a wonderful way to honor our clients and build support for the necessary services which we provide," said Yvonne Cheung Ho, MEDA president & CEO. "This was our 22nd year, and every year, our clients and supporters have demonstrated phenomenal commitment to MEDA, all while having a great time!"
Nearly 100 corporations and Minority Business Enterprises committed to make the event a success. Sponsors included Target, M&I Bank, US Bank and Chippewa Graphics.
"As a longtime supporter, we were excited to help celebrate the success and drive of minority entrepreneurs," said Dana Bratsch, Business Development Leader for Target and Gala co-chair. "By participating in the MEDA Gala, we continue to witness the positive impact of MEDA's efforts."
MEDA thanks all of our contributors, our Gala committee and supporters that helped make this event a success.

Partnership helps businesses, clients excel
For the past five years, MEDA has enjoyed a wonderful partnership with the University of Minnesota's business law clinic to help provide clients access to legal services.
Third-year law students at the University of Minnesota Multi-profession Business Law Clinic work with start-up and emerging businesses under the supervision of business law attorneys in the metropolitan area. On average, they provide assistance to between 12 and 15 MEDA clients a year, including proposal preparation, contract drafting and negotiation, business formation and corporate counseling.
MEDA enjoys this relationship, because it is a win-win for both organizations.
"The partnership between the law clinic and MEDA is two-fold," said Jan Jordet, MEDA director of fund development and marketing. "It's about helping the students gain real world, practical experience; and, it's about helping us meet the needs of our clients who might not otherwise have access to legal services necessary for business success."
"I have between 10 and 12 students a year," said Mary Alton, program director and clinical faculty. "They love it."
Clients also love it.
Bayo Mafe, co-owner of BCS Africa Wholesale Foods said the clinic helped him and the other co-owners, Charles CHiefredo and Stanley Jide, draft their business' articles of incorporation and create a buyer sell agreement.
Working with the law clinic "was a good experience," he said. "I have high hopes now on other things."
The partnership also allows clients who may not ordinarily seek help because they may not have enough information to recognize that legal assistance is necessary.
"[Clients] often don't recognize their own needs," said Alton. "One of our challenges is to have clients that are interested in the services and are motivated."
The Law Clinic only provides transactional law assistance. Businesses involved in any kind of dispute resolution are not eligible.

GALA Sponsorship
MEDA is very appreciative of the support we have received from our corporate and MBE sponsors for the MEDA Gala 2007.
With nearly 20 percent of MEDA's revenue generated each year by the Gala, their contributions are integral in helping entrepreneurs of color succeed.
39 corporations became Gala sponsors this year. This includes 15 general operating funders that made additional sponsorship gifts.
A record 42 MEDA clients (MBE's) also became Gala sponsors.
Thank you again for your support!
